ABOUT THE Paubhā ARTIST - SUDARSHAN SUWAL
Sudarshan began studying painting at the age of twelve, receiving most of his training from his grandfather, a master of Newari Buddhist style classical painting. His grandfather was a tantric practitioner who carried the lineage of Paubhā painting in his family line. Learning from his grandfather, Sudarshan’s education included instruction in meditation, mantra, and visualization, as well as making pigments, drawing, and painting.
Sudarshan began by painting simple figures, such as the Buddha, Ganesh and Saraswati. Under his grandfather's tutelage he progressed to more complex subjects. Since his childhood training, over the last forty years, he has painted more than 575 thangkas of various sizes and complexity, including a 12’ x 8’ Surya Mandala. He painted the great wall paintings in the Vasundhara Temple at Swayambhu Monastery (also known as the Monkey Temple) in Nepal, and he painted the decorative wall paintings for the studio construction of "Little Buddha" in Kathmandu, the English Film based on the life of Lord Buddha.
Sudarshan carries forward the ancient tradition passed on through generations in his Newari family line. He is one of the few teachers of the Paubhā style and the use of natural stone pigments, giving annual workshops in Nepal, Europe, and Bhutan to beginners as well as accomplished thangka artists. He also teaches monks in different monasteries, such as Mingyur Rinpoche’s Tergar Osel Ling Monastery. Sudarshan has been recognized as a national treasure artist in Nepal, and continues to teach and paint every day. One of his goals is to train up another thangka painter to continue the lineage of this precious, sacred art form.

Sudarshan十二歲開始學習繪畫，他大部分繪畫技巧都由他祖父傳授。他的祖父是傳統Paubhā 尼泊爾佛教唐卡大師。他的祖父由家族世代繼承了Paubhā ，同時亦是一位密法修行者。Sudarshan同時從祖父那裡學習了禪修冥想及咒語等佛法修持，亦學習視覺藝術，研磨及製作天然顏料。
Sudarshan從基礎圖像及比例開始學習繪畫，繪制佛陀，印度象神及辯才天女等。在祖父的指導下，他慢慢學習更為複雜的技巧及各類型項目。自童年訓練以來，在過去的40年中，他繪畫了各種大小不同及複雜的唐卡，作品超過575張，其中包括一幅12’ x 8’ 的Surya曼陀羅。除了唐卡作品，他在尼泊爾的Vasundhara寺（猴廟）繪製了長城壁畫，並為電影“小活佛”於尼泊爾工作室繪制壁畫。
